Andorra is a Principality of which is situated in the Pyrenees, adjacent to the French Border to the north, and with Spain to the South. Andora has for decades been a poor and isolated principality, but all of that changed after WWII. It was after this time in which winter tourism boomed in the area, and turned this hidden awat land of spectacular countryside and mountains into a main ski destination. Andorra is a principality with a population of about 80,000 according to its census. The capital is called Vella, where 23,000 people live. Its official language is Catalan and they use the euro in their monetary system. Their constitution is one of the youngest in Europe, dating back only to 1993, and their land is divided into seven administrative districts, of which are: Canillo; Vella, the capital; Ordino, the closest to France, and has many natural treasures; San Julia de Loria, that is furthest to the south, Escaldes Engoldany, which is the most recent as it was created in 1978; Caldea; Encamp; and Massana.
Andorra is 483 kilometers squared in size, and geographically it is very similar to other places in the Pyrenees. Inside the territory of Andorra are 65 mountain peaks of 2,500 meters of altitude. The tallest peak of all is called "Comapedrosa," and measures 2,942 meters.
80% of Andorra´s income is derived from tourism, with more than 10 million visitors anually. It is also curious to note that 70% of its population are foreigners, and only 30% are actual native Andorrans! Spanish, Portuguese, and French make up most of the 70% of the foreign population here.
This is a poligot country and mostly catholic. Although the official language is Catalan, also frequently spoken are Spanish, French, and Portuguese.
On the Andorran calendar, there are two important dates to note: The 14th of March, the Day of the Constitution, and the 8th of September, National Andorra Day.
Finding a place to stay can be a bit complicated as there are so many options to chose from! There are hotels, apartahotels, apartments, hostals, albergues, campings, bungalows, and others... Once you´ve decided in what kind of lodging you´d like to stay, take a browse through our accomodation pages. There, you´ll surely find one suited just to your liking.
There are several activities to enjoy in Andorra during your holidays here such as skiing (of course), hiking, cycling, mountain climbing, or just plain taking a stroll to soak in the natural beauty of this place. After all, Nature is Andorra´s specialty!
