This is the capital of the Andorra´s Principality, and one of its most smallest but most populated. It measures only 30 km squared in which live 23,000 people, and is 1,100 meters above sea level. Since the year 1278, Andorra la Vella has been the capital of the principality, and in it reside all of the legislative and judicial branches of the executive power of the whole principality. This is also the place where the constitution of Andorra was established by its democratic parliament in in 1993.
The population of Andorra la Vella has the same variety as the rest of the parishes, but mostly here live Spaniards (40%); Andorreans (38%); Portuguese (11%), and French (7%). The rest are made up of other nationalities (8%).
Tourism, commerce, and the banking system (of which you don´t have to pay taxes on), are the main sources of income for Andorra la Vella.
Regarding culture, it has the Casa de la Val, a strong house from the 16th century that currently serves as the location for the Parliament of Andorra. Also here is the San Estefano Church and the Church of Santa Coloma.
In Escaldes-Engordany you will also find the monastery of Sant Serni de Tavernoles. |
